Bub > Bud
Proof that horror-comedy isn’t an easy thing to do well. I would say that they made this for kids, but it’s got an R-rating despite there being nothing that I wouldn’t show a child. Zombies do eat people, but you never see it and it’s done in a slapstick manner. There isn’t any sex or real violence, so comparing it to Re-Animator or Return of the Living Dead is pointless. It’s dumb and it feels like it’s pandering to kids, but maybe they actually thought adults would go for this. I do wonder if they made the movie first and then added the title to try ride the coattails of a pre-existing movie.
I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for C.H.U.D. II. I saw it at a pretty young age (before C.H.U.D., which this film has absolutely nothing to do with...one of the true mysteries of movie titling) and at the time I thought it was really funny. I still enjoy watching it more than the original. If I ever have kids of my own it’ll probably be one of the first genre flicks I show them...before freaking them out with some real horror movies.
