Godzilla: King of the Monsters ★★★★

holy shit this movie.

I am going to say some things that, for a film not featuring Godzilla, would be unflattering. Ignore them and see this movie, ideally on an IMAX  screen because there's shots too big for anything smaller, and after ingesting some rattlesnake venom, because this film is looking to totally overwhelm you visually and you might as well be semiconscious anyway.

there's a plot I guess. Some shit about releasing giant monsters to restore balance. That gets scorched by the antagonists ultimately not being very antagonistic.  Also some broken family stuff to give humans a reason to be in this movie.

BUT. The director compared the difference between the 2014 Godzilla to the difference between Alien and Aliens, and in terms of trying to just batter you down visually he's not wrong. There was one point where I just gave up trying to fully comprehend what was even going on and just let the film happen to me, and  I haven't had that happen in a film in quite awhile. This obviously isn't everyone's cup of tea, or idea of an enjoyable movie, but holy shit if it is then this film is for you.

I don't think I'll be seeing this again theatrically, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have one hell of a good time.
