Cowboy Bebop ★★★★★

this is my favorite work of animation (and maybe one of the best works of fiction in general) I've ever seen. everything about this series is phenomenal, thoughtful, moving, and subversive.

Fragmented in it's episodic monotony, but still cyclical in it's entirety, Cowboy Bebop takes full advantage of it's medium as an anime series. It tackles heavy subject matter with the coolest expression. The past, the present, and the future... How do we grapple with them all? Will we have to carry the weight of our past with us for the rest of our lives?

God the main trio are so cool I'm in love w them all... Spike is definitely the coolest anime protag I've ever seen (Mugen & Spike can get it 👀) and I am so impressed with the character development, closure, and complex story arcs that everyone got. Faye's storyline broke me 😭😭😭
The cast's struggles, although unrelatable from afar, are just variations of the struggles and pains we all deal with in everyday life. Loneliness, belonging, regret, betrayal, existentialism, sacrifice, and identity.

It was also such a refreshing and experimental work of art, laden with inspiration from different music styles, sports, and worldwide cinema. And the music... omfg I need a soundtrack on vinyl NOW. not to mention the sheer artistic beauty. I love older anime art direction and style; the lush detailed watercolor backgrounds with the bold character design and smooth animation. It's hard to imagine that this was all hand-drawn.

CB is a genre-bending masterpiece of pure animation and storytelling. In a way, it's a perfect time capsule of the way art and life are so closely intertwined.

So so so so so so so amazing, I don't know what else to say but that I'm genuinely so grateful this exists and that I was able to watch it and revel in it's magnificence!!
