Chucho E. Quintero’s review published on Letterboxd:
Please stop saying shit like “this looked like a play,” you’re only embarrassing yourself. Like I said when I logged One Night In Miami, there are plenty of stagey films out there (Fences, American Son, The Producers) but this is definitely not one of them. The cinematic experience is not limited to having several locations and hundreds of background extras, if you think every single-location, small-cast film “looks like a play,” then I don’t know what to tell you.
I like George C. Wolfe’s films. I can say that because I’ve now seen two. He’s only directed five so I’m on the right track. He ain’t Bob Fosse or Sam Mendes but he definitely knows how to direct a film and (judging by his two Tonys) also a play.
In conclusion, this is Chadwick Boseman’s world and we’re just living in it.
