Feels like a coming together of PTA's two eras. The '70s California setting, with a sprawling narrative, and characters with boundless energy (there is a lot of running!), meets the sharp, precise, and controlled direction of his later work. PTA is long passed desperately needing to show off his skill, but you get the idea that he still enjoys doing it from time to time.

Both of our leads are wonderful, and with the hangout nature of the story the…

Despite some of the more objectionable aspects of Ella Garth's character, I thought the movie did a good job of letting her spell out why someone wouldn't want to sell their land despite everything that they know was coming. One of the things that has held me back from loving either version of Rebecca is I've never truly felt the influence of the Rebecca character. Obviously she never shows up on screen, but that is where Laura succeeds. For the entire first half Gene Tierney as Laura is a specter that influences the rest of the characters even though we essentially never see her in person. Does a good job of setting up why the eventual outcome was really the only outcome that was ever going to happen. It's honestly dizzying how many issues there were with the festival before they even let people into the venue, let alone after people started getting dehydrated, sexually assaulted, and a million other things that exacerbated the event. It was a powder keg, and they were so ill prepared for what they were about to unleash, and lots of…

Can you satirize our current world? Genuine question, I'm not sure. I can see where McKay was aiming, but I think his style just doesn't work here at all, and given everything that has happened in the last year or so the movie comes off as tame and lowest common denominator in comparison. I thought things actually started pretty well, but the lengthy runtime eventually drained any energy from the movie and myself.

There are a couple good performances, namely…
