The Favourite

The Favourite ★★★★½

The Favourite may be a relatively conventional film by Yorgos Lanthimos's (un)usual standards but it's still a brilliantly offbeat experience. It features plenty of his typical traits: Kubrick-style wide angle and corridor shots, numerous animal metaphors (rabbits and ducks in particular), the most grotesque of black humour and the most deliciously dry of dialogue.

This engrossing 18th-century menage-a-trois power play is performed by a trio of actresses who give arguably the best performances of their respective careers: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.
