Brokeback Mountain

Brokeback Mountain ★★★★

I find myself so drawn to the seismic bomb that detonates and radiates outward as the result of the harm existing in a patriarchy creates. Brokeback Mountain illustrates the harm these institutions inflict on all, not just women, and it’s an excellent concept to see dissected in great detail.

A tragic love story that ends in anguish rather than victory like so many other queer representative films do. Brokeback Mountain’s impact is widespread and deeply prevalent despite the homophobic ways it was handled within Hollywood at the time.

Slow, sprawling, epic in its coverage, as so many other Westerns are, but with a strong refusal to romanticize the cruel harm that being a “man’s man” creates.
