Claudia’s review published on Letterboxd:
Riz Ahmed is incredibly talented, but his performance as Ruben is him at his absolute best. He makes Ruben such a sympathetic and nuanced character. His commitment to learning the drums and learning sign language to really transform into this character is so evident here. As much as I dislike most of The Academy’s choices these days, I really hope we hear the words, “And the Oscar goes to… Riz Ahmed, Sound Of Metal!” He truly does a phenomenal job. In addition to Ahmed, Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci give incredible supporting performances.
The heart of this film, which is the sound design, is incredibly done, from the opening scene’s wonderfully raucous atmosphere to the nerve-wracking sounds that immerse the audience into Ruben’s experience with hearing loss.
I can still remember strongly anticipating the release of this film since September 2019. And I’m happy to say it did more than live up to my expectations. I won’t hesitate to call this one of the best films I’ve watched in a long time. LOVED IT.
