i was debating between watching this for the first time or watching an old favorite, the glenn miller story. my mind has been in a weird place the last few days, so it was probably ill advised to go for this. my attention was all over the place and i had to keep pausing because the new dog needed to go out. in spite of all the noise running through my brain, this was an amazing experience. feels like a cousin of the schrader night movies. i still can’t believe how quiet hackman is in this. i’m so used to his more aggressive performances, but this is so much more of an interior performance. he and ford are just so good. and francis. those long, patient unbroken takes. one shot moving into another in a way that nobody does anymore.
“does it bother you? walking around in circles?”
