I’ve reviewed The Shining before but after watching it again last night I just want to say that it always amazes me how Kubrick took what could be in the wrong hands be a decent but unremarkable horror/supernatural thriller and turned it into what it is today. The set design is perfect, the acting is great from all three leads (and the excellent Scatman Carruthers) and Kubrick’s masterly control of the tension mean we end up with some truly creepy…
Get Out is a bizarre mash-up of Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives and The Wicker Man that thanks to Jordan Peele’s bitingly witty social commentary and Daniel Kaluuya’s captivating leading performance manages to somehow tread exciting new ground in its genre.
Although not all of the elements came together for me (the TSA agent bordered too much on obvious comic relief) for the most part Get Out is a thrilling and fiercely intelligent film.
Indeed, hopefully Get Out’s success with the Oscars will lead to studios having more confidence in the talents of minority filmmakers.
