The Death & Life of John F. Donovan ★★★

very very messy and kind of shallow, but i’m honestly such a suckup to Xavier’s style and some good ass needle drops that i couldn’t hate this. i get why people do hate this, it’s weird and unfocused structure and some very weird head scratching decisions lead this into some territory that borders on a level of quality Dolan hasn’t stooped to before, with the commentary driven into some very obvious and very nearly annoying territory. i think there is a razor sharp and honestly delivered film hidden within the walls of this, and it shows it’s face sometimes, but never enough to make this a notable entry in Dolan’s filmography. but trembalay, harrington, and portman are fantastic, the film has some great moments of endearing and genuine emotion, and good fucking GOD this man knows how to make some shit look pretty. if you’ve liked Xavier’s previous works you’ll probably like this... his weird little idiosyncrasies have never been more obvious and prominent. can definitely see why this doesn’t play well with a lot of people, but i enjoyed it somewhat
