A nation thrown into a (unexpected? predicted?) crisis with urgent and immediate danger -- a government frozen, with seconds ticking away as the threat grows and mutates.

Sweet Hideaki Anno crafted this kaiju movie as a response to Japan's reaction to the Fukushima disaster, but watching this in 2021 brings to mind another botched disaster. While in the US, our leaders fought and lied and downplayed and bragged their way through coronavirus, but the bureaucracy and red tape that this…

During the slasher resurgence of the 90s, I was too little and too scared to partake. All I remember is the backlash of these movies back then, Scream came and then this and then all the knock-offs and then Scary Movie and so on.

Watching this now, after going through all the classics and not-so-greats of the genre, I don't quite understand the backlash!! A fun little slashie with all the goods - a good enough plot, fun enough acting, wonderful fashion choices, great set pieces (that dress shop, cmon!). It did what needed to be done!!

Malignant takes you on a dreamy, nasty trip through a fully-funded b-horror movie with Y2K inspired music cues, buckets of blood and a mystery that unfurls into the unexpected. Unexpected both plot wise and in the current horror climate. Elevated it is not, but don’t we all crave the shitty gooey stuff? Being a horror fan is being able to enjoy a fancy steak dinner with imported wine…

And with a cat's yowl, my second Hooptober begins!

After I watched and enjoyed the WNUF Halloween Special, every other review said something along the lines of "yeah, but Ghostwatch." WNUF nails the nostalgia perfectly, the commercials and the cheesy newscasters, but Ghostwatch basically says "fuck you, we're not giving you a break." No commercials, no winks, no rest -- just a slow burn until a tense blowout at the end that made me cover my eyes.

    Perfectly well-done, boring…
