So I said that making time for a rewatch would probably improve my feelings on the film and I'm very happy to say that it's even better! There are so many split-second and background gags that are just incredibly hilarious on their own, and it feels like the pacing is much smoother this time around. Not only that but I think seeing this again allowed me to appreciate the emotional beats much more. Also, this might be just from not really knowing much about the film when I first watched it, but there was a lot of stuff that I was surprised how much I related to (having a character going into film school that felt like they finally found a sense of community was a weirdly specific touch lol) and now some moments just genuinely made me tear up this time around. Honestly, it's just really nice to see an animated film where it feels like the people making it really put all of their passion into it. It's just unbelievably wonderful, in more ways than one.
Another thing, there's a shot near the beginning of the film where Katie has a kind of Mount Rushmore of favorite directors behind her and I noticed one of them is supposed to be Lynne Ramsay which indicates Katie has probably seen We Need To Talk About Kevin and I don't know how to feel about that.
