Escape from New York

Escape from New York ★★★

80s cheese at its finest, John Carpenter's Escape from New York is perhaps one of the most thrilling, entertaining and original sci-fi action films of the early 1980s. With John Carpenter's unforgettable style, the synthesized music and some great action stunts, this is popcorn entertainment at its finest - sadly, action films nowadays don't look at original entries into the genre like this more often, or else they would usually not be so uninspired and often outright bad.

Kurt Russell is a great leading actor, even though his character remains bland and uninteresting (which may have actually turned out to be my biggest problem with the movie - that the characters were not more accessible). In general, the film is exciting and thrilling, stylish and entertaining. Not Carpenter's best, but it doesn't need to be; in a filmography as eclectic and creatively charged as his, this film still manages to stand out.
