Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal ★★★★

An open and honest story that gives its title more meaning as the film goes on. Unexpected in the best way. First intentions is that this could be the heavy metal comeback story trope that inspires everyone, no matter what obstacle, to keep living their dreams. Instead, it’s wholesome and grounded start to finish giving a realistic approach to an unfortunate problem people face in and outside of the music industry. The sound design gets the highest marks, allowing us to peak into a window that sends a wave of frustration and lack of understanding through. The emotional beats never break through for me but the final shot put a smirk on my face. Would love to see Riz Ahmed in another leading role and both Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci in more films. Likely to be an unsung gem to close out 2020.
