Don Hertzfeldt is one of the highest rated filmmakers on Letterboxd, so with World of Tomorrow Episode Three: The Absent Destinations of David Prime just out, we asked if he would share a list of the films that have influenced his own.

From snippets of soundtrack, to specific sound effects, to David's reclining cockpit, Don's notes contain entertaining insights into his storytelling process. “Many genre films today seem too afraid of being ‘unrealistic’, which seems to prevent them from having much fun,” he writes, in explaining why Forbidden Planet makes the list.

Some of the films that popped up surprised even him. “Many of the movie references I’ve listed… are pretty obvious ones that World of Tomorrow wears on its sleeve. Other connections are maybe worn beneath a shirt, rumpled sweater, and overcoat. Still other movie connections I wasn’t even aware of myself until I sat down to write this list.” Don reveals that it's likely that a line from Full Metal Jacket influenced Emily’s iconic line in WoT3: “Now is the envy of all of the dead”.
