The Beaches of Agnès 2008
"While I live, I remember"
Alright, I've done it. I've completed Varda's filmography. Every single one of her features, documentaries, and shorts (or at least all the shorts included in the Criterion boxset). I guess it's time to write about her films, the impact they've had on me, and why I think she was the greatest director to ever live.
The first of her films I saw was "Cleo from 5 to 7," right after first downloading the Criterion Channel.…

Paddington 2014
Recommended by Abby
Back in 2014, when I was 11, I went to the movie theater with my Godmother. I had to decide whether to watch Paddington or the remake of Annie. Being a stupid 11-year-old who liked musicals, I chose the Annie remake. It wasn’t good at all, but I liked it well enough at the time. Still I can’t help but think of the impact it might have had had I chose to watch Paddington instead.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg 1964
Indescribable. I love everything about this movie. The colors. The music. The direction. Catherine Deneuve. The editing. The writing. The brilliant songs. The perfectly lovable characters. Catherine Deneuve. The ending. The staging. The costumes. The sets. The emotion. The simple yet oh so beautiful story. And of course, Catherine Deneuve. This movie just means so much to me. It holds a special place in my heart. Thanks so much, Jacques Demy, for this masterpiece.

The Matrix 1999
“The Matrix is surely the kind of film about the matrix that the matrix would have been able to produce.”
-Jean BaudrillardKinda bugs me how much this movie totally misses the point of Baudrillard’s work despite referencing him constantly (through quotes like “the desert of the real” and a copy of Simulacra and Simulation appearing on screen), and reportedly taking so much influence from him. Sim and Sim was apparently even required reading for all the actors, and yet it…

Turistas 2006
My dad directed this movie and here are a few things he told me about it if anybody is interested:
1. He didn’t want to make it in the first place
2. He hates the ending
3. Brazil is really nice and he had a great time there
4. He tried his best to make this movie not antagonizing Brazil and had an almost all-Brazilian crew but it was pretty difficult given what he had to work withAnyway this movie isn’t that good and it’s gonna be really awkward if my dad ever downloads Letterboxd and sees this rating.

The Life Ahead 2020
I can excuse being an emotionally manipulative, cheesy, derivative oscar-bait movie with a couple mediocre performances, but when the main kid flosses near the beginning, that’s where I draw the line.
