Carpenter managed to take the same basic premise - an alien who takes the shape of humans - and make two separate movies that each reflect universal truths of humanity. The Thing shows humans at their worst: paranoid, terrified and violent. Starman too shows this side of humanity, but juxtaposes it with the love and compassion that makes us who we are.
Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges are both great of course, and I can't wait to see rewatch this.
Hug your loved ones while you still can.
