An alternate title could be: “What we want when we think about wanting”
Stalker is more a philosophical meditation than a sci fi IMO. The story/film was created during a Cold War Era in which the detente collapsed and Russians were catching secret glimpses of the western world through products/material goods. I find the conflicted feelings of the characters to mirror that of many Russians of the time, having their preconceived notions of how life could be...challenged.
Some might argue that the concepts and themes explored were more universal and I don’t disagree. Ultimately, all people yearn to leave their grey world in search of the fabled green world
