Hands are a powerful device to convey emotion, from tenderness… all the way to threat. But mostly the latter! I explain: Hands with no face to be associated to, are easily perceived as the main tool for an impending attack from a stranger, an intruder violating the personal space associated with our most vulnerable body part: Our viewing eyes!
No surprise that hands are primarily usually used on posters for horror movies… especially when paired with other archetypes of danger and fear: Blood, nails, grabbing… all while contorting or coming out the dark, the fog, the ground, the “other side”, or worse yet… from nowhere. Loose limbs: the outcome of unspeakable horrors!
