    Raya and the Last Dragon

    Could have been deeper? There’s lot of worldbuilding and lots of characters and it kinda rushes through both of those things to tell its story in 90 minutes. The parts we get are pretty endearing, but it’s aiming to be a little too much of an epic for the format it’s packed into. Can’t believe how much I liked the lil con artist baby.

    i had never seen this before and was not prepared for how mean-spirited it is! i mean that in a good way, mostly, though it is wild how relatively quickly some words went from being like edgy jokes to recognized slurs, and this movie is definitely on the wrong side of that line

    The emotional beats landed here and that’s worth a lot more to me than the plot holding together completely, which is good, cuz it doesn’t (I also don’t care what the smoke monster was on Lost). What a weird, interesting, ultimately idiosyncratic  exploration of grief and loss and the necessity of letting go, built around all of this billion dollar IP! What a gift Kathryn Hahn is! What a weird choice to cast Evan Peters as like a cutesy easter…

    I really liked about 30% of this and really hated most of the rest. I don’t want to just focus on the negative, so I’ll start by saying naming the new cute droid after my dog was the most I’ve ever felt pandered to by a filmmaker, and I appreciate it.
