Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★★½

The material clearly matches better with a play format than it does a film. But Chadwick Boseman's riveting and heartbreaking cry of despair, sprinkled with the looming and transformative presence of Viola Davis' Ma Rainey, makes this a memorable and essential work in the catalogue of contemporary african-american cinema.
