It was pretty cool to see John Ford, whose work influenced Akira Kurosawa, complete the circle of influence with something so similar to Rashomon. Sergeant Rutledge shares the same basic plot (a rape-murder case shown through flashbacks and different viewpoints), but the two films tell different stories.
Rashomon focuses on whether the bandit is guilty, and on the inherent subjectivity of the human experience. Sergeant Rutledge establishes early on that the charges against the titular black soldier are likely bogus…
