• Godzilla vs. Gigan

    Godzilla vs. Gigan

Despite Gigan's terrific entrance as one of the coolest kaiju we've seen and the fun theme park setting. It takes a bit too long for any kaiju to really make an appearance in the film (things only really gets going then).

  • Godzilla vs. Hedorah

    Godzilla vs. Hedorah

Wacky, weird and wild. There's so many ideas and visual motifs here, it's just endlessly enjoyable and Hedorah is so repulsive and vindictive. Godzilla using his atomic breath as a makeshift jet pack is an iconic cinematic moment.

  • Destroy All Monsters

    Destroy All Monsters

The all-star extravaganza to end them all and a blast from start to finish. Honda achieves what Altman or Anderson wishes they could. Also featuring the debut of Monster Island (which is in fact *not* a peninsula).

  • All Monsters Attack

    All Monsters Attack

An enjoyable cool down after Destroy All Monsters. The attempts to revitalise the series are obvious but the idea of framing it as all existing in a kid's imagination is more charming than it should be.

  • Son of Godzilla

    Son of Godzilla

This film *shouldn't* work. Any introduction of child sidekicks is always a bad idea, AND YET, I'm genuinely rooting for Minilla and I just want him to be able to impress his emotionally distant father. The ending is beautifully melancholic.

  • Ninotchka

You'll believe Garbo was a severe soviet acolyte. The range!

  • Ebirah, Horror of the Deep

    Ebirah, Horror of the Deep

Fukuda make a strong debut into the franchise. Ebirah is truly terrifying. Mothra helps classy up the whole affair. Godzilla and Ebirah's game of boulder volleyball is a joy to watch.

  • Invasion of Astro-Monster

    Invasion of Astro-Monster

A confused rehash of the previous film in the franchise (1964's Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster) but without Mothra to help classy the whole thing up.

  • Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster

    Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster

King Ghidorah arrives with a BANG! Finally all the major elements of the franchise are here and this film does nod disappoint. The final fight between Ghidorah, Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra is a blast.

  • Mothra vs. Godzilla

    Mothra vs. Godzilla

Mothra arrives and finally brings some prestige to the series like a Kaiju Vanessa Redgrave. The film's colourful and Godzilla has a great entrance and is an absolute hot mess in the finale fight that's a blast to watch.

  • King Kong vs. Godzilla

    King Kong vs. Godzilla

With Honda back at the helm, the series finally crystalises into it's Showa-era format. The US-edit framing is chaotic but once the stars start fighting it's pretty fun. Shout out to the literal use of an octopus for the giant octopus monster. Regrettable uses of blackface though during the early portions though.

  • Godzilla Raids Again

    Godzilla Raids Again

More chaotic and unfocused (the US re-edit is mostly responsible) but it's fun to see G-man's BFF Anguirus make his debut and the convention of the "Kaiju v Kaiju" plot setup of these movies being laid down.
