Memories of Murder ★★★★½

'what kind of detective sleeps at night'

haunting, incisive characterisation and melancholic turmoil. impacts on an emotional, physical, psychological level. the ability from bong joon ho to mount the type of broad comedy with a dark, noir sensibility is staggering, jokes about erections swiftly sliding into a tense shot of a woman being watched in the dark, with neither of these elements being diluted. stands apart also because it commits to defining each detective as human, the last 20 minutes reveal the sheer emotional and psychological devastation the investigation had wrecked upon them, resulting in poor decisions, faltering outcomes, and broken men.
