Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind

MotherFUCK is this ever Canadian. Interviews with Lightfoot are interesting, as is the archival video. But this feels even more like a series of nostalgia gel caps than the usual boomer rock doc. There’s a part where a talking head says if “If You Could Read My Mind,” “didn’t somebody else record that?” There follows a two minute montage of famous artists covering the song. Come on! Fuck you!

Surprised at how much I liked this! The story’s been told before, the EMOTIONAL stuff only occasionally worked on me, the cat subplot was silly. But when it worked, it really worked — the horrors of the the “lost soul” desert, the Picasso sketch angels who are more amused by their jobs than occupied by them, the objects Joe uses to re-enter The Great Before, the third act of “La La Land” being condensed to three minutes.

    Wonder Woman 1984

Not just bad, but “The Room” level bad, with dialogue that sounds like it was translated back and forth and direct-to-video-worthy effects shots. Listless action scenes that focus on seemingly random details (why the screaming old robber in the mall scene?). Every character, from the resurrected war hero to the president, acts and talks like an imbecile.
