Georgina’s review published on Letterboxd:
Tully surpassed my expectations massively. As far as films go I had put off watching this one for a while, with the plot line appearing rather bland in its appeal, but oh my god I was so wrong
For me, Tully has been one of the few films largely overlooked so far this year. Charlize Theron’s performance as a struggling, 30-something mum of three was no less that captivating in its raw and unfiltered portrayal of parental monotony. I found myself, despite not having children of my own relating to Marlo; the exhaustion of her character so poignant it seemed to seep offscreen and completely encapsulate me.
The arrival of Tully’s character delivers a whole new dynamic to the film, as we witness an emotional transformation of character through a unique friendship. It felt that Reitman was making a subtle truth, by showing the audience the realistic appeal of a ‘night nanny’, providing the film with a safety-net that the characters so visibly desire, whilst slowly tearing it apart using mermaid imagery to symbolise this ultimate fantasy. Revealing how the concept of stress-free motherhood, like the mermaid itself, is just a myth.
