    Anthony Mann's Man of the West has a much darker tone to the other films I've seen from the director. Gone was the genial James Stewart, replaced in this film from 1958 by Gary Cooper, in a role that suited Cooper's surly onscreen nature. I'm not that familiar with Cooper, but if Tony Soprano's description of him as the "strong silent type" is accurate, then this would appear to be the quintessential Gary Cooper film.

    At the risk of embarrassing myself, I've only ever seen just one of Tobe Hooper's filmography. Maybe that's the reason why Hoop-Tober and I haven't really gelled, or maybe those dark nights have me seeing Ghouls and Ghosts on every late-night dog walk? For a genre which is definitely my wife's favourite, I never quite get through the month without partaking of a few of her choices, and this was one of them.
