Army of the Dead is good then it’s not, then it’s good again, ultimately I’m on the fence because I had ton of fun with it but it feels incomplete and its so weird coming from a movie 2 hours and 30 minutes long, what happened here Snyder ?
First of all, I have something that I need to mentioned because I still can’t believe it: What in the actual fu** happened here with the dead pixel over the 4K stream on Netflix (Google it if you don’t believe me, you’ll be SHOCKED) Apparently, they missed that BIG time in Post-production and you can fix it by watching it in 1080p but why blame it on the viewer? Just be honest and admit that you were too lazy and incompetent to fix it before the release date. It distracted me from the majority of the movie and it impact my enjoyment a lot. (because it comes and goes, over and over and over) I still can’t believe it, does Zack Snyder watch his own movies in 720p or somewhat? How didn’t he actually tried to addresses it before the release of his film is BEYOND ME. /rant over
Now let’s really talk about, you know, the movie. Army of the Dead know his own identity crystal clear, it’s a Zack Snyder’s Zombie movie, it’s mindless fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously and it takes places at Las Vegas, if those 3 boxes got check, you are here for the ride of your life. The intro was solid and probably the best part of the movie, it’s insane how the first 15 minutes of the movie is seriously the highlight of the movie because there’s nothing else that comes even close to that epicness. Dave Bautista is good and he’s not the problem here, the rest of the cast is not bad but there’s something that feels odd with their acting, great job to Martin (Garret Dillahunt known from The Fear of the Walking Dead) he was a nice addition to the cast, I liked him a lot.
Let’s talk about the action scenes, there’s a lot of them (starting from the second act) and the majority of them are really satisfying, they are well-shot and dynamic. I just wished we got more of them, it’s weird to follow this huge team to simply never see them work together, it kinda never happens.
While Army of the Dead provides a lot of positive things to help you finish your giant bowl of popcorn, it doesn’t come without its fair share of problems. The script is bad, the film feels too long for its own good and I don’t understand what was going on with the lens selection, most of the time it was blurry and out of focus and it distracted me so much that I had to reminded me that it was Zack Snyder signature, but not in a good way. I’m also really disappointed about how for the majority of the film, they mentioned things that are never comes to fruition, for instance the shamblers and the rain, the gigantic saw…that THEY NEVER used, the daughter trying to save Geeta for just dying in the helicopter crash, god it was infuriating and unsatisfying.
Overall, it feels like I am complaining a lot but in reality, I had a great time for easily 75% of the runtime..it’s just that coming from Snyder, it could and it should have been way better and smarter but hey ! ....at least there’s a Zombie tiger, doesn’t that count for something ?
