American Psycho

American Psycho

watched this again with friends for movie night and I couldnt stop thinking abt what one of my teachers said when telling us how to maintain professional relationships: "you just gotta find something to talk about. for women, its jokes about men." and this movie is one big joke about men!!! perhaps this is blasphemous but of the popular 90s/00s movies that criticize masculinity and consumerism this holds up much better than fight club, probably bc it was written and directed by women. ladies we gotta reclaim this once and for all from guys who think they're literally patrick bateman

stray observations:
- everyone who serves Patrick at the salon, the cleaners, and the Christmas party is Asian
- during the chainsaw chase scene Christie is clothed while Patrick is not
- I like both interpretations of the ending. The themes hold up equally well and its equally hilarious whether he did or didnt kill all those people
- I like all of the deleted scenes but see why they were removed. Especially the one with courtney and patrick and the condom, which I find to be the most genuinely upsetting of the deleted scenes and hardly find any comedy in, even though I think it would be interesting to keep in bc it is such a visceral depiction of a kind of rape women endure that isnt usually called or recognized by them as rape. Again, the movie being directed and written by mary harron and guinevere turner TRULY made a huge difference
