One of the more underrated writers in Hollywood is Taylor Sheridan. For those of you unfamiliar with his work he’s done movies such as Sicario, Wind River, and Hell or High Water. If you haven’t seen any of those then you need to get right on that immediately. Now he has his latest movie starring Angelina Jolie. I feel like it’s been a while since we’ve seen her in a role like this. Those Who Wish Me Dead takes a different approach than Sheridans other films. Rather than slowly building the suspense with superb acting and well directed action scenes, Sheridan basically makes your typical action thriller with his usual frontier look as the background. I’m still very mixed on this movie. While I really did enjoy this movie and found it entertaining, I couldn’t help but compare this to his other films that he’s written. His other movies I’ve listed are just that good and this one just isn’t even close to being on par with those. This might be a spoiler for those reading, but my main issue with this movie is the fact that we don’t even know why the hell we’re watching the events unfold. You can easily retort with “oh but it keeps the mystery alive and makes us wonder”. Fuck that. I want to know why I’m watching two hitman go after a kid the entire movie. Sheridan seemed like he really wanted to make an action crime thriller but at the same time really wanted to show mountains in the background to make it look beautiful. I love his settings for his movies, but this time it just didn’t feel right. I always love seeing Jon Bernthal in more movies so that was a plus and it was nice seeing a seemingly skinnier and doppier looking Jolie. While this movie is enjoyable, it’s just not what you can expect from the writer. For those of you who haven’t seen his other work yet then you won’t even notice or know what I’m talking about. Too many clichés for my man Sheridan so unfortunately I’m going to be sour on my rating.
