Ross T’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’ll watch anything with zombies or similar, so I was always going to check this out.
Army of the Dead is derivative of a load of better movies but made well enough that it’s still quite good fun. Thankfully not too wacky, although it is low on tension due to the fairly knowing treatment of the whole situation and some predictable events. Felt a little rushed towards the end despite the lengthy running time so the pacing could have been better.
So not as good as I would have liked, but better than I feared.
As a side note, although this wasn’t his greatest role, I definitely think David “Dave” Bautista is comfortably the best actor of anyone close to his physical stature. He’s able to embody a character with more humanity and inspire more empathy than the likes of Dwayne Johnson or Jason Statham could ever dream of. I’m thinking particularly of his brief but impactful part in Blade Runner 2049, but I hope Villeneuve has managed to get another strong performance from him in the upcoming Dune.
