Constantine ★★★½

Film #7
Task #30: A film you WOULDN'T watch with your mother! --> There are many, many movies I wouldn't watch with my mom (largely due to the fact that she HATES most movies), but this one fits as she would never watch a movie with any sort of supernatural or demon movie, as it's too far out of her comfort zone.

Francis Lawrence's "Constantine" depicts John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) as he battles various supernatural demons in hopes to regain a place in heaven after he dies. When Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) appears on his doorstep asking for help in the investigation of her sister's suicide, Constantine doesn't realize the measures he will need to take to not only ensure her safety, but the safety of the world.

I thought the plot of this film was quite interesting. It had several strange, visually disturbing scenes (ex. Beeman's encounter with Balthazar) as well as stunning, beautiful scenes (ex. Constantine's trip to Hell). With these scenes interjected throughout the film, the audience was sure to stay engaged and interested in the production and what Constantine would encounter next. Additionally, Lawrence utilized interesting camera angles, including scenes looking straight down or straight up at the actors, rather than limiting himself to more traditional angles. Again, this gave the film another interesting intricacy. Finally, the pacing was excellent, using great transitions from one scene to the next, balancing slower scenes with action-packed scenes, and keeping the audience engaged from start to finish.

The performances were great and added to the excellent execution of this film. Keanu Reeves perfectly embodied John Constantine with every action and dialogue. His excellent performance reaffirmed the fact that he is an amazing actor whose performances do not disappoint. Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Djimon Housou, Max Baker, and Pruitt Taylor Vince also delivered great performances, each taking on the intricacies and oddities of their respective characters.

Overall, this was a unique story with an interesting plot. It was enjoyable to watch and I would definitely recommend it, especially to fans of films utilizing supernatural elements or fans of Keanu Reeves.
