An absolutely wonderful - and completely unnecessary - adaptation of the musical. Everything about this was well done - the arrangements, the direction, cinematography, choreography, acting, singing, the whole shebang - top notch. And yet, the whole time I felt that if there hadn't already been a classic adaptation of the material, it would have resonated stronger and this whole effort- as impressive as it was - just wasn't needed.
You can tell Spielberg put his heart into this, and that's always a joy to experience, so that's probably the only real reason to see this new version of the musical - if you're so inclined.
Last September I watched the "Alan Smithee" extended cut of David Lynch's DUNE. It was still a mess, just longer. Now after seeing the new Denis Villeneuve version, I wanted to revisit the original theatrical cut and see if it made any more sense.
Narrator: it actually did help, a bit. But it's still a mess.
