Escape from New York

Escape from New York ★★★

Another Carpenter classic I cannot get fully behind. While Escape from New York already has itself firmly planted in the 80s on the visual side, it still feels like a 70s movie. For a film that uses a ticking clock narrative the pacing isn't exactly relentless, resulting in a plot that fails to convey any sense of urgency. Even the action scenes aren't that thrilling. Which sucks, because the film has all the ingredients to be great. Cinematography and production design are outstanding, the setting is as cool as they come, the story takes place mostly a night, and Kurt Russell is Kurt Russell. If only it wasn't so damn slow…
