Wow. I wasn't expecting to like a Yorgos Lanthimos film—his curdled and misanthropic worldview really isn't for me. But with a script he didn't pen and unfamiliar period-piece trappings, his signature acidity does wonders to this story of interrelationships between intimacy, politics, and gendered oppression.
If you squint at this long enough, it's a really bawdy, nasty version of Clouds of Sils Maria.
