    The Making of Star Wars

Star Wars : The Complete Saga Blu-Ray Box Set (2011 Issue)

You have to look a little further nowadays to get past the generic 'making of' documentaries. Typically laced with actors gushing over the directors, it all gets very dull. Enter this vintage piece, complete with C3PO and R2D2 hosting things. That element wears thin pretty quickly as it's really aimed younger viewers. It's amusingly countered by the narrator, a very serious William Conrad.
The real joy comes from seeing…

"I'll always worry about you Alton. That's the deal."

At it's heart, this plays a lot like a 'faux 80's' remake of Starman, one of my all time favourite films. Whilst it may not quite reach the heights of that bit of sci-fi perfection, it has a damn good go.
It's an admirable attempt at a gritty sci-fi based chase movie. Director Jeff Nichols delivers yet another twist on his back catalogue, doing something completely different genre wise, with each…

    "Got any Boom Boom Lemon?"

The latest Netflix action thriller arrives with little fanfare, but is actually a decent addition to the genre. Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as the title character, a highly trained assassin, and we're dropped instantly into the story with her on a very high profile hit. So far, so run of the mill. It shifts up as gear as Kate finds herself with just 24 hours left breathing oxygen (that old chestnut!) as dark(er) forces have…

"Keep to the marked trail. The land here can be unforgiving."

I do like surprises. On settling into this reboot of the budget horror franchise, my expectations of a group of millennials facing off against bloodthirsty inbred cannibals didn't exactly go to plan. Sure, this was never going to subvert things to the extent it was a feel good exercise in filmmaking, but given what the six part franchise is known for, it's fair to say it panned out somewhat…

"I hate to agree with conspiracy Santa..."

Based on some very lacklustre trailers, tepid promotional artwork, and it's direct to streaming nature, this had me sharpening my critical knives prior to viewing. I'm unexpectedly happy to report that it's more than worth your time if you're a fan of the genre. Although it doesn't get much beyond it's premise of Chris Pratt Vs Aliens, it never takes itself too seriously and has more than a bit of fun with it's…

"Is that Darth Vader or Yoda?"

I never saw this one coming! What an utterly charming little film. I'm far from the biggest fan of the rom-com genre, but the fusing of it with a 'time loop' scenario elevates it above the ususal fare. Yes, Groundhog Day wrote the book on this, and it's referenced more than once in the film, as is 'Edge Of Tomorrow'. But this time around, it's more of a 'knowing' journey with lead Kyle Allen…
