Serenity ★★★★

“She’s tore up plenty, but she’ll fly true.”

One of my all time favorite movies for a few years, and a tried and true comfort movie ever since then. It’s a key text in luring me away from fantasy stories and back toward science fiction. It’s been a few years but I still probably have the script memorized.

Stuff I probably liked back then, but appreciate more now: the gliding camera work that’s really only showy when it needs to be, the score, Nathan Fillion’s closely guarded rage, and the treatment of violent and unjust death as something that should and will haunt anyone with a conscience.

There are a few things that have soured for me too—I don’t love its harsh libertarianism, for one—but I can appreciate the flaws, too, and I think I understand a few of my own quirks a little better having rewatched this. I’m glad I got reacquainted with it tonight.
