I Know Where I'm Going!

I Know Where I'm Going!

An oldie but a goodie - praised by Martin Scorsese as "a masterpiece." A young woman full of vitality and life seeks her path in the remote Scottish Hebrides (the isle of Kiloran, even smaller and more remote than Jura). I was clued into this movie by a reference in Andrew Ervin's novel "Burning Down George Orwell's House" (highly recommended) - the protagonist and his wife used to watch this movie together in their earlier happier days. (Jura is where Orwell secluded himself while writing "1984.")

The film is set in wartime Britain. Joan is going to Kiloran to marry one of the richest men in England (a man old enough to be her father, as her father points out.) "Darling, don't worry about me. I know where I'm going!" she calls to her father as the train departs Manchester, just as the completely forgettable title song begins. But then...

P. S. 12-year-old Petula Clark (yes, her) has a small role in the film. No, I didn't recognize her.
