Read the notes for the information behind each title! :)
(Description of the list, short version)
This is an extremely incomplete list. While doing tons of research on the history of cinema, I figured it'd be much more convenient for anybody out there to have a list of titles that represents a certain innovation, movement, anything of historical importance since the history of cinema has virtually always been represented by "landmark" films. All the research got too much for me however and I realized it might be a good experiment to have the good userbase here to contribute anything they may know! :)

(The boring long version)
While working on a paper, I realized that in writing about the history of film, which I've done numerous times, I've been looking through the same articles and digging out the same titles mentioned again and again in various sources that talk about the history of cinema. I should've known this all already and was saddened by the tedium from seeking such small gems of information that, I realized, are almost always encased, denoted, or represented by a certain "landmark" film or two.
So I figured that there should be a list for any student or casual reader out there that would need or like to read a quick go-to place for a crash course in the history of cinema, as organized through films since it seems so efficient to; if all the work is done here now then it'd be a time-saver for those reading this in the future.
Please feel free to contribute to this list or correct anything as I know for a fact there are many of you out there that are far more knowledgeable than I am regarding cinema's history but please don't get offended if I don't include a film just because your reasoning is that you (or other people) really liked it.
I also know nothing about Bollywood so if there's a good soul that can inform me about the history of India's gargantuan film industry (through a landmark title or two) that would be much appreciated.
