Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal ★★★★½

Score: 87%

I'll keep this fairly short cause I don't have much to add on the conversation around this film - it's fantastic. Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci give two of the most genuine and heartfelt performances of the year, and the direction is superb throughout. The main standout element for me was the editing - the zooming in on Ruben as we experience what he can hear, and then the zooming out when we hear what everyone else could here worked perfectly, and it made the experience all the more immersive. Obviously the sound design is fantastic, but if I want this to take home one Oscar tonight, it will be for the Editing. Ruben's character arc is one of the best of the year, and the film manages to perfectly capture the hope of his character by the end of the film. It avoids many tropes that I was worried about it having going in, and, despite being a bit slow at a couple of points, is overall a fantastic experience, and I would strongly recommend it.
