Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★★★

Man, the guy I bought my movie ticket from looked pissed as hell when he was giving it to me. And to be honest, why shouldn't he? 4 teenagers with wet hair, smelling vaguely of chlorine and weed on a summer night, going to see one of the biggest movies of the summer.

Ever since Stranger Things, it's safe to say that retro, and the late '60s-80s has been "in". Suffice to say, there have been a lot of TV shows, movies and clothes all marketed at people to give them a nostalgic look back into those 'simpler times' At first glance, Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood looks like any of those marketing campaigns. And if not for Quentin Tarantino's mastership of his craft, it would have been easy for this film to have slipped inbetween the cracks into that wormhole. And while many may claim that this is bandwagoning off this retro phase (and they'd be right) this movie has proven to be a different animal, making others pale in comparison.

What this movie lacks in what many people expect from a Tarantino film (corpse and trunk shots, sing-song esq dialogue, ect.) this movie makes up with hippies, creative and unexpected endings, feet galore, and most of all interesting characters. While this movie is MOST LIKELY not exxactly what the audience is expecting walking in, you become more wrapped up in the fate of the characters than the act story going on around them. You truly get pulled into this world Quentin Tarantino has created, where anything can be changed at his whim.

No, this movie didn't go as expected. Yes, I expected a little bit more. Yes, I think that this is probably not *the best* of Quentin Tarantino's film. But does that mean that it wasn't good? Of course not. It was fantastic. Probably one of the most fun movies I've seen in a theater, with a really good soundtrack, AMAZING acting, and a storyline unlike any other. While it didn't necessarily always feel like a Tarantino film all the time, it was still a great experience and a hell of a watch.
