Southland Tales ★★★★½

"I saw your little movie and I think it stinks!"

Watched the Cannes cut this time around. For those of you hoping that, like Kelly's much-maligned director's cut of Donnie Darko, this would answer even a few of your lingering questions... you're shit outta luck here. With the exceptions of a few moments where we get new information that gives us the "what" but not the "why", this version not only doesn't tie up loose ends, it actually has a tendency to raise further questions! Unfortunately, despite a tweaked structure, some extra scenes and some musical differences, the cut is still fundamentally the same wild, weird movie- even with the studio-mandated cuts, it's just as willfully incoherent and insane. I was hoping for extra insanity, and while I got a bit of that (especially some extra bawdiness from Dwayne Johnson, giving a performance that stretches far beyond just his natural charisma), this cut doesn't feel expanded, it just feels kinda unfinished. Luckily, I still love this movie, convoluted warts and all. If this is how Kelly coped with the Bush years, I'd love to see him take on now. Someone give this madman money soon, please!
