i kept waiting for it to grab me. and it almost did, so many times. but i never really got my claws around this film. Herman Mankiewicz was probably an interesting guy, but this script (and i'll say it, Gary Oldman's performance) doesn't really capture that. maybe watching 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯 𝘒𝘢𝘯𝘦 again before this was actually a mistake. this movie mirrors it in so many ways, but unlike that film, 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘬 feels like its ambition is restricted by reality. yet somehow doesn't reflect reality nearly as well.
