Laika wows again. The only thing more amazing than this stop-motion film's epic and stirring visuals is that the creators were able to complete it in a normal two year production cycle.

It's seemless incorporation of Japanese arts such as shamisen, okiyoe, origmai, and ink wash into the Laika model of cgi-enhanced stop motion gives it a distinct visual style that enhances the eastern-folk-inspired story. Even the credit sequence set to Regina Spektor's cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps,…

Death has come to your little town

~ Donald Pleasance’s haunting Dr. Loomis

    Positive thoughts
    - The main theme is iconic for a reason, John Carpenter’s early synth work is absolutely incredible
    - The way the tension and the audience expectations makes normally idyllic or innocuous things like sunlit white curtains blowing around from an open suburban home window have a profound sense of impending doom is absolutely unmatched in its effectiveness
    - The way he puts back on the…

    ★★★

    Positive thoughts
    - The movie starts off strong using historical imagery and ideas to create a sense of melancholy and tension to be overcome
    - Has more character and layers than the original

    - I really liked the way they incorporated the pink elephant scene

    Negative thoughts
    - The human heart of the story at the beginning is…

This is a hard movie to classify or find comparables for. Do I compare it against other adventure movies - which usually have more action? Do I compare it against other fantasy movies - which usually have more childish whimsy or supernatural horror? Do I compare it against other medieval historical films - which usually strive for realism or accuracy?

This is a medieval fairy tale brought to life with some modern touches applied very carefully and deliberately - and…

Along with Pirates of the Caribbean this is truly one of the last great adventure movies. It's a genre Hollywood hasn't really fully given up on, but seems to have lost the map to.

The fantastic cast (from top to bottom), strong plotting, and solid art design are the stars here. The premise has some plot holes, but the movie quickly convinces you not to care with great characters in fun and tense situations. A movie should not be able…
