a good friend sent me an advance copy of this and I don’t want to be hyperbolic but this is quite possibly the greatest holiday special ever put to record, bar none. Paul Lynde is rolling in his grave and Gene Simmons pisses his sheets at merely the thought of this masterpiece. Would love to learn more about Hamm Manor and the escapades of one Hubie Doo, but I’m more than happy with what we got here.…
• opens with the Grouch Anthem, which Oscar correctly refers to as the best part of the movie
• who the hell organized this bird council?
• it's pretty crazy how many different characters all those original Muppet performers handled. I can't even imagine how long it would take to master controlling one of the puppets, let alone multiple voices and characters.
• all the animated scenes look super nice, curious if they were done by the animators behind Muppet…
Though I didn't love Good Time, it had me excited to see what the Safdie brothers would make next and I'm happy to have my excitement justified by Uncut Gems, which feels like both a continuation and evolution from the aesthetics and escalating intensity of their last film. Sandler leads a whole cast of great performances, the soundtrack was fucking killer (was getting some major Akira vibes during some scenes; Daniel Lopatin, you madman) and now I'm anticipating what these two do next even more than I was the first time.
