Gold Diggers of 1933 ★★★★

Fun and extravagant musical about the fun and entertainment we need to get us through trying times, even as it functions as such itself. There's not a lot of depth, but it's goddamn earnest in everything it does, with Blondell and Powell trading off on how many scenes each of them can steal. I have to admit though, I spent far too much time wondering if that was a real child or a midget in that park sequence. Every time I was sure, something made me question it again...

And honestly, having some doe-eyed automaton-lookin' dame stare me directly in the eyes and sing about being in the money right off the bat was not something I needed right now.
