I rewatched this on Christmas day with my good friend Jonathan, and spent the next few days trying to figure out how I would write about this film. Letterboxd has gone to shit over the holiday season, and so I finally felt motivated to start my own blog where I wrote an extended piece on the movie. I'd appreciate if it could be given a read, I'd transfer it straight here but I don't think it would look visually appealing on this site given its length, and I liked using stills to illustrate different points.

Cycles of violence. As epic in scope as Ouedraogo would ever get, and by far the bleakest of his films. The ending being bookmarked by the invasion of the white man feels very telling, with their presence being notably absent up to this point in the rest of Ouedraogo's films. It's only going to get worse from here.

The shootouts in Johnnie To movies feel like they were filmed by God himself.

I clocked the path of misery porn that this film was set to go down on pretty quickly, so yes it didn't take very long for me to turn on it.…
