Casa de Lava

Casa de Lava ★★★★

Pedro Costa's dreamlike film re-works Jacques Tourneur's I Walked With a Zombie in a tale of loneliness and isolation in postcolonial Cape Verde. The cinematography is sublime, capturing an evocative, dry natural landscape shaped by volcanic activity. There's one incredible shot late in the film in which Ines de Medeiros is visible from a distance with her red dress standing out amid the blackened landscape.
