maybe the true question asked by lou’s father was not lost in translation at all. ruben, at that moment, is confronted with everything he’s faced and sacrificed in order to be at that table. and although he answers a different form of the question, you can sense he is pondering something deeper. we meet ruben only briefly before the way he experiences the world is changed indefinitely, but everything we see from that point is where he grows. and so we do not need an answer from him at that table. it is all in front of us, ready to be soaked up in our stillness.
